What is GS1 Assistant?
GS1 Assistant is a Shopify app for merchants who manage GTIN, UPC, or EAN barcodes from their own GS1 Company Prefix. Connect the prefix, then assign the next available codes to one product or a whole catalogue while the app checks validity, duplicates, and GS1 status. It writes assigned GTINs into Shopify barcode fields and supports catalogues with 20,000+ variants.
Why GS1 Assistant works
Copying GTINs between a GS1 portal, spreadsheets, and Shopify makes every new variant another chance to reuse a code, mistype a check digit, or discover a rejection after listing. GS1 Assistant assigns from the prefix you already own and validates each barcode before assignment, so barcode problems are caught inside Shopify instead of at marketplace submission.
GS1 Assistant features
- Bulk and automatic assignment. Assign GTINs to batches of products from your GS1 Company Prefix. Pro users can connect Shopify Flow to assign a GTIN automatically when a new product is created.
- GS1 validation before listing. Each barcode is checked against GS1 data before assignment, including format, check digit, ownership, and status, so invalid codes surface before a marketplace sees them.
- Duplicate and error detection. The dashboard flags duplicate GTINs, invalid check digits, and barcodes that do not belong to your prefix across the catalogue.
- GS1 sync and export files. Direct API connections synchronize products with GS1 Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, and Brazil. Other regions can download a file in their GS1 organization's import format.
- Marketplace ready exports. Download spreadsheets formatted for Amazon Seller Central, Google Merchant Center, and wholesale buyers without rebuilding barcode data by hand.
Who GS1 Assistant is for
- Shopify merchants with a GS1 Company Prefix who are still copying barcode numbers between the GS1 portal, spreadsheets, and product records.
- Stores listing products on Amazon, Google Shopping, Walmart, eBay, Etsy, or wholesale channels that want to catch invalid or mismatched GTINs before submission.
- Merchants with large catalogues that need to assign and review barcodes in batches rather than update product variants one at a time.
- Shopify stores in Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, or Brazil that want product data synchronized through a direct GS1 API connection.
