Niche Product Matchmaker, an illustration of the idea

Idea

Researching a new purchase starts with a few YouTube reviews. Then a Reddit thread, then spec pages on a few shop sites, and by then you have tabs open and no answer.

All that information tells you what the products have. None of it tells you which one fits you, which is the only question that matters.

A product matchmaker is a site that asks a few questions and recommends the products that fit, for one niche. It replaces a long list with a short one that already knows your constraints. I like it because the answer takes a minute, not an afternoon.

For an office chair finder, say, pick your height, budget and comfort type, and the site narrows to the chairs that match. Each has a price and a link to buy it.

Why now

  • ShapeFinder, a site that helps you choose a mouse, keyboard or mousepad, made $130 in its first month. A one-niche finder earned money in its first month, so the affiliate model pays. Substack
  • ShapeFinder uses buying links from 8 shops and brands, Amazon among them. One finder can earn from several shops at once, which means the earnings spread across programs. shapefinder.cc
  • PGrid, a site that compares laptops, monitors and computer parts across shops, lists 6 product categories. A second site runs the same comparison format across shops, so the pattern works in more than one niche. pgrid.app
  • Amazon Associates, Amazon's program that pays sites a share of the sales they send, pays 3% on furniture. Amazon's program covers furniture from day one, so a chair finder has a ready program to join. affiliate-program.amazon.com
  • Autonomous, a maker of office desks and chairs, pays affiliates 5% on chairs, $24.95 on a $499 chair. A chair brand pays $24.95 per sale at 5%, so commission per sale is known before the site goes live. autonomous.ai

How to validate it

A drawn quiz page with 3 questions about height, budget and comfort, and 3 office chair recommendations below, each with a price and a buy button
What the first version could look like
  1. Pick one niche you understand, like an office chair finder, and collect 50 chairs with specifications, prices and buying links. Build a filtered list in Directify, a no-code builder that makes a site from one sentence, with filters on any field. For an office chair finder, say, set the filters to height, budget and comfort, and add the quiz once those work. Pass: yes: the filters return different chair lists for at least 2 different filter choices.
  2. Sign up for the affiliate programs, each a shop's offer to pay sites a share of the sales they send. For an office chair finder, say, start with Amazon Associates and Autonomous's chair program. Then replace each product's shop link with an affiliate link, a buying link that pays the site a share of the sale. Pass: yes: at least 1 program approved your site.
  3. Post the site to the subreddit or community for your niche. For an office chair finder, say, that is where people share home office setups and ask what chair to buy. Watch clicks with clicks.page, an analytics tool that counts clicks on any link or button. Pass: 10 or more visitors click a buying link within 2 days.
  4. Leave the site up for 2 weeks and check your affiliate dashboard each day. The shopper pays the retailer their normal price, and the retailer pays you a share of that sale. I would not skip this step even if step 3 looks good, because a click is not a sale. Pass: yes: 1 or more commissions earned in 2 weeks.
