Idea
Most niches have a list that their audience probably still builds by hand. Someone needing it opens site after site, copies each detail into a sheet, and checks whether each entry is still live.
The search takes a few hours the first time. Those same hours come back the next time someone else needs the same list.
A database for one niche, compiled and checked by hand, so a visitor finds in seconds what otherwise takes hours.
Say the niche is podcast appearances. A founder picks a topic and finds shows still accepting guests, each with the host's contact. I like it because the checked data is what someone pays for.
Why now
- MapsData, a tool that turns Google Maps searches into lead lists with emails, sells plans from $19 a month. Pulling contact details from public pages is now a $19 tool, so seeding a first list costs little.
- Rashid Khasanov, a founder who built 3 paid database sites, spent 2 weeks collecting 700 investors by hand, then made $4,000 in the launch month of a 40,000-investor database. The work of gathering 700 entries by hand is the same problem a paid database solves.
- Investor Hunt, an investor database for founders, grew from about 1,000 hand-built entries to over 110,000. A hand-built list of 1,000 entries grew to 110,000, so a small start is all a first version needs.
- Journalist Hunt, a searchable database of 200,000+ journalists, earns $260 a month from buyers on its lower plans. Entry-level buyers pay first, which is where a new database starts its pricing.
- Investor Hunt earns $2,800 a month with no marketing, only search. Index the entries well and search brings recurring revenue without paid ads.
- AngelMatch, a database of 125,000 angels and VCs for founders raising money, earns $29,000 a month from 360 active subscribers. A checked list for one audience, sold monthly, can be worth the hours of verifying each entry.
How to validate it
- Pick an audience that spends hours collecting a list by hand, say, founders looking for podcasts that take guests. Use Piloterr, a web scraping API with 500+ ready endpoints, to pull 100 entries from public show pages. Check each contact detail yourself. Pass: 100 entries are in the sheet with a verified contact for each.
- Build a searchable page for the list with Directify, a no-code directory builder. Show each entry's name and niche free, and put the contact details behind the paywall. Check every email with Truelist, an email validation service, before you open the page. Pass: yes: 5 or more entries show free and the paywall blocks contact details.
- Find 3 founders in a community for your niche who want podcast appearances. Offer each full access at $29 a month. Journalist Hunt's cheapest plan is $49 a month. I would start at $29, below that, because a first list of 100 podcasts is far smaller than 200,000 journalists. Pass: 2 founders pay within 1 week.
- Post the free preview in a founder community. Submit the product with Boringlaunch, a service that submits your startup to 100+ launch sites. Set up Commenze, a no-code platform for SEO pages at scale, so each entry gets its own page in search. Pass: 50 or more people visit the free preview within the first week.
