A Board Where Founders Swap Promo Spots, the illustration from the newsletter issue

The idea

What it is

The problem

A small founder has distribution, a newsletter, a directory, a community, but no budget for ads. Finding another founder whose audience fits yours and who wants to trade is a cold-outreach lottery.

Most swap pitches go quiet. The exchange is worth it. The cold pitch is not.

The product

A board where founders list their distribution and what they will swap, so a matching founder can find them without cold outreach.

Post your niche, your promo spot (say, a mention in your newsletter) and evidence of traffic or subscribers. A visiting founder browses the board, finds a listing that fits their audience and reaches out directly. I like it because the exchange already happens and the board makes it findable in one place.

Who pays

Buyer
A founder with something to trade, say a newsletter for developers. They pay to have their listing shown first to the other founders browsing the board for a swap.
Price
The founder pays $49 a month for a featured listing that appears first on the board. Open Source Alternatives, a directory of open-source software, sells a featured listing for $99, so $49 for a new board with no readers yet is well below that.

Why now

In October 2026, Open Source Alternatives, a directory of open-source software, sells a featured listing for $99 and a sponsor spot for $299. Founders already pay to appear first on platforms where other founders browse.

In October 2026, TypeFast sells each keyboard key placement for $50. A founder can trade for one instead of buying it.

I did 2 of those deals myself in October 2026. One was a week's feature on Micro SaaS Examples, my directory of small software businesses and weekly newsletter, for a key on TypeFast. I could not find a board where either side found the match without cold outreach first.

I think the first board with 20 or more founders who have real distribution takes this market.

How to validate it

  1. Reach out to 10 founders who run a newsletter, a directory or a social audience in one niche. Ask if they would list on a free swap board. Message them on X. Pass: 6 or more say yes.
  2. Build a landing page with 5 listings using Directify, a no-code directory builder. Post it to the X community for founders in that niche. Pass: 10 or more founders apply to list within 2 weeks.
  3. Email 3 founders whose listings are on the board and offer each a featured listing that rises first for $49 a month. This is the step I would run first. Pass: 2 or more pay within 2 weeks.
  4. Introduce 2 matched pairs of founders from the board. Before you send the intro note, use Stalkr, a social listening tool for startups, to check each side has recent traffic. Pass: 2 pairs complete a swap.
