What is Socratic Owl?
Socratic Owl is an iPhone app that gives step-by-step answers to homework questions across math, science, and other subjects. Students either scan a problem with the camera or type it in, and the app returns a worked solution rather than only a final answer. It runs on iOS 17.6 or later, also works on Mac and Apple Vision, and is positioned for students aged 4 and up.
Why Socratic Owl works
When a student gets stuck on a homework problem at 9pm, the alternatives are either guessing or waiting until the next class. Socratic Owl provides a step-by-step walkthrough so the student can finish the work and understand the method, not just copy the answer. The mechanism is a dedicated, ad-free tutor on the phone the student already carries.
Socratic Owl features
- Scan to solve. The camera captures a written problem and the app returns a worked solution so the student does not have to type out long math expressions.
- Type to answer. Questions can be entered manually for cases where a photo is awkward, which keeps the app useful beyond textbook scans.
- Step-by-step explanations. Each solution is broken into steps so the student can follow the method and apply it later, not only see the final answer.
- Ad-free study. The app has no advertisements so a study session is not broken up by interruptions.
