Idea
A founder runs a birthday sale on X, a yearly tradition where a developer gives apps away free on their birthday. A discount code goes with it. A few followers see it, and by the next morning the post is gone.
The deal was real, but it never reached the people looking for one.
A directory where founders list their birthday and a discount on their product, and the deal appears on the day it counts.
A founder adds their name, product, discount and coupon code. The site puts it under "Today's Birthdays", a section of the directory that shows deals live on that day. I like it because the birthday gives the deal a reason to exist.
Why now
- FounderPass, a membership club of startup deals for founders, has 100,000 founders and charges $99 a year for premium access. 100,000 founders already pay for startup deals, so a birthday deal lands where founders look.
- One developer's birthday sale grew from 5 apps to 18 apps free for 2 days. One birthday sale grew year over year, so the habit forms without a place to collect it.
How to validate it
- Build a simple directory page with a form where a founder can add their name, product, birthday, discount and coupon code. Start with 5 to 10 listings you find from X and Reddit, entered by hand. Pass: yes: the form saves a listing and it appears under "Today's Birthdays" on that date.
- Post the directory to a subreddit for indie founders and to X, linking to today's birthday listings. Pass: 20 or more people visit the site within the first 48 hours.
- Email 5 founders who have posted a birthday deal on X. Ask what they would pay for a featured listing on their birthday. This is the step I would run first, because everything else rests on whether founders want to pay at all. Pass: yes: 2 or more founders say they would pay for a featured birthday listing.
- Add tracking codes to the coupon links in the first 10 listings, and watch the clicks over the following week. Pass: 3 or more people click through to a deal on the same day it is listed.
